Description

This course is a survey that explores and contextualizes the various musical forms that characterize Central and South American music throughout its evolution. Through readings, lectures, films, discussions and projects, the course focuses on the discovery and discussion of the specific Afro-Diasporic roots of national genres and styles. This course will also be an introduction to representative artistic figures and their works as well as ongoing creative exchanges among European-, Indigenous-, and African-derived musical traditions in the formation of a larger Central and South American musical identity. The particular genres to be explored include Brazilian, Colombian, Panamanian, Mexican, Guatemalan, Uruguayan, Argentinean, Peruvian, and Venezuelan popular musics on the contemporary international stage.
