Students had the chance to jam with the Dafnis Prieto Si o Si Quartet for the fourth event in the Marsalis Berklee Jams series.
Cuban-born Prieto is a drummer, composer, New York University music faculty member, and two-time Grammy nominee. Following a set by the Latin jazz dynamo's quartet, students performed with the group in a series of jam sessions at Cafe 939. (Students who signed up were selected to play with different combinations of the quartet.)
Prieto's quartet featured Peter Apfelbaum on saxophone and percussion, Manuel Varela on piano, and Yunior Terry on bass.
Marsalis Jams was conceived by alumnus saxophonist Branford Marsalis '80 as an initiative to provide a forum for established musicians and high school and college students to interact. The performance and jam sessions are coupled with master classes and clinics. The series is produced in partnership with Marsalis Music, the Cambridge-based record label founded by Marsalis. Prior Marsalis Jams guest artists include Fly and Miguel Zenon.
