More than 200 people turned out for Berklee's third showcase at the 29th annual CMJ Music Marathon—New York's largest music event—despite on and off downpours throughout the day. Those who couldn't attend the afternoon show at the Bowery Poetry Club last Saturday were encouraged to watch the show online via the club's live webcast.
The showcase, presented by Berklee, Heavy Rotation Records, and Berkleemusic.com, kicked-off with a solo set by singer/songwriter Nathan Reich, who was joined by pedal steel player Tommy Bohlen and cellist Alexandra Spalding for select songs. The Fast Romantics traveled all the way from Calgary, Alberta, to perform their infectiously catchy pop-rock tunes. New York band Man on Earth rocked the crowd and led the audience in a sing-a-long. Nini & Ben brought the sound level back down a notch with their warm and rich acoustic folk that again featured Bohlen's accomplished playing. Zigmat, fronted by sultry singer Monica Rodriguez, offered cool visuals to accompany its hypnotic, funky electro-rock, and Sex! capped off the show in raucous style, playing its brand of bluesy rock to an enthusiastic crowd.
In addition to a day of great music by up-and-coming alumni and student bands, the audience was treated to free copies of the Dorm Sessions 6 CD—the latest compilation by Berklee's student-run label Heavy Rotation Records—and lucky raffle winners walked away with a Berkleemusic online course and two badges for next year's CMJ Music Marathon.
