Starr Desmond
During tonight’s program, Starr Desmond BM '19 will speak to her experience with the Berklee City Music program. Desmond is an innovative singer-songwriter, performer, teacher, and choreographer from East Boston. From the age of four, she has always had a love for the arts. She began studying dance at Eleanor Rubino’s Academy of Performing Arts (now known as Jessica Gordon’s Academy of Performing Arts) in 2001. At that same time, she became a student at ZUMIX, a nonprofit youth organization, where she studied piano and voice. At ZUMIX, Desmond developed a love for songwriting and performing and was connected to the Berklee City Music program.
In 2014, she attended the Aspire: Five-Week Music Performance Intensive, and the following year she was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee. Desmond graduated cum laude from Berklee College of Music in 2019 with her bachelor’s degree in songwriting. While at Berklee, she joined the City Music mentoring program, receiving a Berklee Urban Service Award (BUSA) in 2017. Desmond went on to teach private lessons in voice, piano, and songwriting. She is one of the founding members of the Berklee a cappella group On the Vox, and served as the group's director of choreography. Since 2019, she has been teaching choreography at Jessica Gordon’s Academy of Performing Arts. In 2020, Varsity Vocals presented Desmond with the Outstanding Choreography Award for her work with On the Vox at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). Currently, Desmond is pursuing a master’s degree in music education at Boston University.

With nearly all members hailing from New Orleans, Youngblood Brass Band is a dynamic student-led ensemble channeling this legacy with heart and authenticity. About Berklee City Music
Berklee launched City Music over 30 years ago to provide access to high-quality music education for public school youth in Boston. Today, City Music is a global movement, serving more than 60,000 students internationally in the last year alone.
City Music programming is designed to provide multiple points of entry and clear sequential pathways leading to college. Broadly, City Music comprises City Music Boston, our flagship program, and the City Music Network, which connects City Music Boston with 46 network sites across the US, Latin America, and Canada, and the Berklee PULSE Comprehensive Online Curriculum.
Program Success
City Music alumni have pursued undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at dozens of institutions in addition to Berklee, including Dartmouth, Brown, Georgetown, Harvard, Columbia, the University of Michigan, Cornell Law School, New York University, Oberlin, Stanford University, Spelman College, Suffolk Law School, Temple University School of Medicine, Wesleyan, and Boston University. Graduates have embarked on remarkable career journeys as performers, composers, producers, and educators, as well as in fields such as medicine, law, architecture, and engineering. Many also take on leadership roles within Berklee and beyond.
Notable alumni of the program include Micaela Jaé Rodriguez (lead actor on Apple TV series Loot and FX series POSE), Bryan Abreu BM ’04 (keyboardist for Keyshia Cole), Tuffus Zimbabwe BM ’05 (keyboardist in the Saturday Night Live band), Ashley Rodriguez BM ’10 (former top-24 contestant on American Idol), Courtney Harrell ’01 (producer for America’s Got Talent and former top-12 contestant on The Voice), and Dr. William Junior ’07 (anesthesiologist).
Since 1993, Berklee City Music has awarded nearly 300 full-tuition scholarships and more than $34 million in total scholarships. Through the program, over 2,000 students have also received scholarships to attend Berklee’s Aspire: Five-Week Music Performance Intensive. Currently, 40 students are enrolled at Berklee with support from City Music scholarships—including full-tuition, partial, and housing awards.
Proceeds from Amplify Berklee help deserving young people pursue their dreams and aspirations. We offer a very special thank you to our sponsors and guests who helped make tonight possible.
