Updates from the Executive Director

April 2024

Dear Berklee Valencia family,

The month of April started with the last days of Easter, an important holiday in Spain (Semana Santa), and one particularly celebrated in the neighborhood where our undergraduate students live. There are processions with elaborate floats and marching bands. I am sure your students found this time interesting!

Beyond festivities in the city, we had festivities on campus including our INOCON event, which consisted of a conference and a concert. This event, organized by students and held over three days, included panels on a variety of topics relating to the music industry, including topics of sustainability and diversity and inclusion. There was also a networking event for students, with representatives from different organizations.

Spring brought the return of our Lago de Conciertos series, with performances by student bands, as well as end-of-semester concerts by our undergraduate and graduate ensembles. These are wonderful open-air events that draw hundreds of people each night, including members of our community, Valencia residents, and tourists. They are a great way to showcase the work of our students and give them a public performance opportunity.

We continued to welcome a variety of guest speakers to campus, including Dr. Ron McCurdy, professor of music and assistant dean of the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at USC Thornton School of Music. He spoke to students and presented to faculty and staff on the Arts Curriculum in the 21st Century. Dr. McCurdy also performed with members of our Black Student Union at a Lago concert.

The end of the spring semester is upon us and we are sad to be saying goodbye to our undergraduate students. We hope they have had a wonderful semester or year in Valencia and we look forward to hearing about their future projects.
