DJ Techniques

Course Number
CMAT-533
Description

Students enrolled in this course will develop basic skills using the turntable both as a means of live expression and performance and as a production tool. Weekly practical and experiential exercises will be emphasized. The course traces the historical development of the turntable from its origins through its importance as a major expression of hip-hop culture, and to the turntable's prominence in contemporary music. Artistic, ethical, and legal issues surrounding the use of the turntable will be examined.

A 2-hour class is complemented by a 1-hour lab, so that students can learn about the history, culture and ubiquity of the DJ and turntable techniques, then synthesize and gain practical experience in relevant and current DJ techniques.
